Work Planned For Joplin's Memorial Education Center

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

The Memorial Education Center in Joplin currently houses administrative offices and some school services, but it's about to take on a new role.

Over the past 100 years, the Memorial Education Center has worn many hats.  As a high school, a junior college, a junior high, a middle school, a temporary high school, and now, the administrative offices for the district.
That 100 years of history is key the building's future.
Dr. Kerry Sachetta, Superintendent of Operations: "So even though there's going to be a face lift, I think you're going to see a lot of the elements of the old building, some of the entry ways and the doors and those kinds of things will be staying intact."
As for what the future of the building is the first floor will soon house some of Franklin Tech's Adult Education Programs.
Sachetta: "Right now there are three programs coming here, Surgical Technology, Practical Nursing, and Medical Office."
That will require a redesign of the first floor.  The plans for that were presented at a board meeting in august and at Tuesday night's special meeting, they approved the contractor to start work.
Sachetta: "The completion date is set for June of 2019, we feel like it's about a 115, 120 day calendar for work in the facility."
Sachetta says they plan to be open for classes for fall of 2019.
School officials tell us Franklin Tech won't be using all of the classroom space in the beginning, but do plan on adding programs as time goes on in the additional space.
