Coffee Trends Inspire Three New Shops In The Metro

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

A new survey by the website "Webstaurant Store" has noted an increase in coffee shop customers, especially those 13 to 18.  Three new coffee shops have opened in the Joplin metro area within the last couple of months, so we sent Chris Warner to find out what trend's brought them here.  Although there's a growing trend of younger coffee drinkers, the coffee shops we visited all told us they see all ages frequent their stores.
Neil Simmonds, Zinc Coffee: "We've actually had a lot of young families that come in here, mom's that brought their kids in here."
Some say the reason they've opened up is a demand for unique coffee and experiences.
Adam Lopardo, Joplin Greenhouse Coffee Shop:  "Just really focusing on a single origin, direct trade, knowing where the coffee comes from, a really good relationship with the farmer, the roaster, and the barpers and the baristas that are actually making the coffee."
Another location, this one in Webb City, gets their coffee from a specialty supplier in Columbus, Ohio, but they opened their shop, for another need.

Randy Miller, Crazy Llama Coffee: "We just saw a big need and a big void in northern Joplin, Webb City, Carl Junction area"
Miller says they were inspired after the Price Cutter, which housed a Starbucks, closed earlier this year.  Then there's the coffee connoisseurs who have their own reasons for visiting the local shops.  Jared Scrowther, for instance, prefers the local shops and  their coffee over energy drinks and other alternatives.
Jared Scrowther: "Just your overall health, it's just a little bit better for you."
The survey says one of the things driving younger folks to the local shops is the lighter, creamier beverages, Narissa Gaston, agrees.
Narissa Gaston: "Usually I get mocha's or chai lattes because I don't like the strong coffee flavor, but I love getting to try something new in different places."
The coffee shop at the Joplin Greenhouse, Zinc Coffee on South Main, or the Crazy Llama in Webb City, will have you covered for whatever your taste buds are craving.  All three shops are locally owned and the owners say they don't really compete with each other, because they're all helping the local economy.
