Drone Academy helps Students Learn Skills in Chanute

Updated:
CHANUTE, KANSAS -

Chanute High School is offering a program where.. for some students.. the sky's the limit.

Riley Kappler is a junior at Chanute High School, and wants to be an engineer once he graduates from college.

Riley Kappler, High School Student:"I don't want to just work on planes, and I don't just want to work on cars like everyone else who just settles for something."

Kappler knows he will need an understanding of things like planes to achieve that goal.

That's where the Drone Academy at Chanute High School comes in.

Jill Stevenson, Instructor:"First we start off with some flight safety, then go over a unit on just the overview of drones, and then we kind of work into flying them."

The class got it's start a few semesters ago when instructor Jill Stevenson noticed how many industries use drones professionally.

Stevenson:"Drones have the potential to get jobs in a lot of different industries. Right now, construction, real estate, and so there's a potential for kids to get a job maybe even right out of high school as long as they have the skills."

And many of the students say flying them is harder than it looks.

Kappler:"The first time, it went kind of okay. It's a lot harder than you think it will be.

Kyler Eschen, High School Student:"It kind of takes practice before you can actually learn how to fly them steadily and perfectly."

To Kappler, it's a way he can take the first steps in becoming an engineer.

Kappler:"Part of the airplane part ones has to do with droning, and you know if I learn how to control the drones, learn how they work, that could help me."

This is the fourth semester the drone class has been offered at the high school.
