Miracle Field Vandalized Third Time: Equipment Shed Burned

Updated:
Joplin, MO -

The Joplin Fire Department said the fire that destroyed the equipment shed used by the Joplin Miracle League is  suspicious in nature.

A  shed that held bats, specialized balls, t-shirts and the leagues mascot suit, burned late Saturday night around 11:30 pm.
The fire chief estimates that the fire caused around $7500 of damage but the President of the Board of the Miracle League said it could be much higher and estimates have yet to be gathered. Eric Secker said  the field is being targeted by vandals previously damaging a canopy with fireworks on July 4th that also melted rubber coated safety fencing. .
Secker reacted Sunday saying, "It's very irritating.   In fact this is the third act of vandalism at our field since the summer and so it's perplexing  why anyone would want to do this. You just ask yourself questions of why? So yeah emotionally it's very troubling,  discouraging, disappointing."

Margie Black, whose son has autism and played at the Miracle Field said, "I think of the kids and adults that play. I think of the parents who it brings so much   joy to us to see our kids do something that maybe they wouldn't have gotten to. To think that somebody purposely came and wanted to destroy that, take that away,  it's, it makes your heart hurt. It does."
Secker said he will meet with park and city officials about possible insurance coverage, since the field was gifted to the city by the Miracle League.
The miracle league board will also  meet to plan possible fund raising efforts.
