Oklahoma Fugitive Captured in Newton County

Updated:
Newton County, Missouri -

A fugitive who escaped from police custody in Oklahoma has been captured in Newton County, Missouri.

Officers in Moore, Oklahoma had arrested Walter Blount -- suspected of trying to steal vehicles -- but he escaped before he got to the jail.

After that -- he made his way to Newton county, Missouri.

Police surveillance video shows Walter Blount escaping from the back of a police cruiser in Moore, Oklahoma last Wednesday.

Authorities say Blount then led police on a chase in a stolen vehicle..

Yesterday (10-2-18).. Neosho Police picked up the chase after Blount tried to use a stolen credit card at a convenience store.

Chris Jennings, Newton County Sheriff:"Neosho Police Department did contact him. He ran, they pursued. At one point they lost sight of him."

At that point the Newton County Sheriff's Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol got involved.. until he wrecked a stolen vehicle on Otter road.. and fled into the woods.

Jennings:"At about 11 o'clock last night, in Granby, there was an individual that located our suspect inside his vehicle, apparently attempting to steal it."

The owner of that vehicle on Random Road in Granby tried to confront Blount.. but he fled again before authorities arrived.

Jacod Kelly, Granby Police Chief:"If he would have gotten in a vehicle, he would have gotten out to town, and who knows where he would have been picked up at. He could have got a lot further."

It was on Random Road that Granby police officer Cody Bottom spotted Blount around 8 this morning.

Kelly:"As officer Bottom was traveling west on random road, he saw the subject coming out of a back yard. The suspect immediately took off running. Chased him around a couple houses and by that time county had shown up with extra officers and he ran right into them."

Blount was arrested without further incident.

Kelly:"It was just really good teamwork this morning."

Jennings: "We contacted numerous people out in the area to watch out for this individual, secure your vehicles, we went to several homes, and I think that helped a lot right there."

Blount did not have any weapons on him when he was arrested by authorities.

Blount is currently being held at the Newton County jail on seven different county charges.
