Swedish Group Visits Joplin to Share History, Culture

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

A group from Sweden made a stop in Joplin.. to mix history and bruises.. so they can preserve their culture.

The members of Telge Glima aren't afraid of a little pain.

Henrik Ljungqvist, Telge Glima Member:"Our motto says a lot.. we combine history with bruises."

They were doing just that today.. in lion country.

Hailey Landrum, MSSU Student:"Oh my gosh, they were so entertaining!"

Howard Belk, MSSU Student:"I thought it was pretty awesome. The tough man kind of games, I like those."

The 25 member group from Sweden travels the world sharing traditional Nordic games from before the 19th century.

Some were simple.. but others were pretty painful.

Ljungqvist:"We're really quite childish, so we like just playing, hurting each other, ya know doing things like we did when we were boys and girls."

Many of the braver students didn't just watch..

Joakim Persson, MSSU Student from Sweden:"I wouldn't try the harder ones where you like pull on your neck and stuff.. but the jumping and the stick stuff, it's fun stuff."

Landrum:"It was really hard. It's not as easy as you expect them to be."

While it might have seemed like all fun and games, a big part of the presentation is spreading history and culture.

Ljungqvist:"We try to gather games that we actually knew occurred in the viking age. The aim of our society is to spread the games around the world, to make people play instead of sitting at home with a computer or tablet or whatever. I think we've achieved much of our goals, in a way, to keep this playing history alive."

A passion that makes the groups impression.. as memorable as the bruises.

Telga Glima was on campus as part of the Missouri Southern "Nordic" semester.
