Westar Energy is sending out a warning to all of its customers about imposters calling. The callers claim to be a Westar employee threatening to disconnect services. They request that customers make a payment using a prepaid card. Thieves manipulate caller ID making it appear as though Westar is calling and they speak with authority. They also provide information like amount due to sound credible.
"Scammers create a sense of urgency to get customers to act quickly rather than allowing them time to check their account," Gina Penzig, manager, media communications, Westar Energy, said. "We will never require a pre-paid card for payment. Also, we notify customers multiple times in advance if service may be interrupted for non-payment."
