PSU Volleyball off to Hot Start

Updated:

The Pittsburg State volleyball team has struggled to win over last five years. They haven't had a winning season since 2012, and finished just 7-24 overall last season.

This year, it appears the Gorillas have turned the corner under third-year head coach Jen Gomez.

Pittsburg State has gotten off to an 11-2 start in non-conference play, with their first MIAA match coming up on Friday, at home against Missouri Southern. After already topping their win total from a year ago, the team feels pretty good heading into conference play for the first time in a while.

"We had kind of a rough start coming into this program," says PSU senior Lauren Maisberger, "But so far we've really bought into what coach Gomez has done and what this program is now about. We're really excited that it's turning around...andour hard work and our commitment has really paid off.

"We'll spend time together and just look back and we're like 'this is a whole new game'", adds senior Lauren Regier, "We'll win games and we'll be like "I'm so happy I could cry because we wouldn't have done this in the past."

This has been one of the best starts, and I don't know that we could have really imagined it this way," Gomez says, "I think this has been a huge confidence builder for us, especially leading up to conference coming up this weekend. We really needed that momentum."
