Lamar Begins Quest for 8th Straight State Title

The Lamar Tigers are in the middle of their first week of football practice.

The Tigers are the 7X defending Missouri Class 2 State Champions, and enter the 2018 season on a 49-game winning streak. They did graduate a few great players, specifically TW Ayers and Cooper Lucas. Both of those kids signed to play at Division I Arkansas State. However, the team does return 29 letter-winners from last season, including three who earned All-State honors in 2017.

The Tigers will have starters returning at every position group this season outside of defensive line.

Every year, you hear Lamar head coach Scott Bailey, as well as players and fans, talk about the BROTHERHOOD. That's what the team and community has come to know the team by. Bailey says one of the main reasons the team has been so successful in the last seven years is the chemistry and the relationships that the players build each and every season.

"I think they just grow that way," Bailey says, "It's probably one of the blessings of high school athletics. Especially small town athletics over college. You grew up together. You don't know anybody else. You know a lot about your teammates, maybe sometimes more than you want to know about your teammates. That develops a closeness that you don't see in a lot of college programs or maybe larger high school programs. I think it's one of the blessings and one of the beauties of being in a small town and growing up together."

The Tigers will begin their season on August 24th, on the road against Logan-Rogersville.

Check out another clip from our interview with head coach Scott Bailey below, talking about what keeps him going after spending the last seven years on top of Missouri Class 2 football.
