A Wilson County, Kansas man is sentenced today (August 8, 2018) to more than 19 years in prison. Hayley Hurst, his girlfriend at the time, has pleaded no contest.
57-year-old Michael Elam was found dead inside his home after it burnt down on December 13th, 2016. According to court documents, two suspects broke into the home at 509 Wisconsin in Neodesha, Kansas.
Authorities arrested 37-year-old DeJay Lynn Schlegel and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Hayley Hurst, in connection to the case.
On May 22nd, 2018, Schlegel pleaded guilty to reckless second degree murder, one count of arson, one count of interference with law enforcement and one count of theft. Today, he was sentenced to 238 months in prison.
Hurst originally pleaded not guilty to second degree murder (unintentional but reckless) and theft. On August 8th, 2018, she pleaded no contest to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of obstruction and one count of interference with law enforcement. She's scheduled to be sentenced on October 23rd, 2018 in Wilson County District Court.
The case was investigated by the Neodesha Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Jessica Domme of Schmidt's office is prosecuting the case.
