Lion Cub Academy Offers Perk for Parents

Updated:

Sherri Noller is a working mom at MSSU who takes pride in her job and her children, but she explains that juggling her career with her kids can be a challenge.

"To be able to enjoy time with my family, but also make sure that I'm doing the best job that I can at my job is a constant balancing act," says Noller, a faculty member for Missouri Southern.

Noller began working at Southern in 2012 and has had both of her children, now ages four and ten, cared for at the child care center on campus. She says that knowing her youngest is just a walk away gives her peace of mind.

"Having my children here at Missouri Southern, I know that they are cared for and loved, it's a huge relief for me knowing that my child is so close, if something were to happen or if there was a concern, that I could just run right over if I needed to," Noller states.

Noller is one of 23 faculty/staff members who will be receiving a free week of child care at the Lion Cub Academy and Nikki Tappana, director of the facility, says that this is something positive for the university.

"I think it helps with retention and recruitment. I mean if you're looking for a job and you're younger and you think, you know, 'Hey, I wanna start a family." Well, one, I have a place I can take my children when I have them and, two, you know, maybe I can get some different help there," says Tappana.

A week of child care can cost anywhere from $170 - 215, so moms like Noller see this break as a big advantage.

"Having that benefit just helps ease that burden a little bit and we also appreciate it as parents that the administration is finding opportunities where they can to help continue to support us as employees," Noller states.

MSSU is also now offering six weeks of paid maternity leave for mothers and three weeks for fathers.
