Missouri Southern Kicks Off Practice

The Missouri Southern Lions got on the field at Fred G. Hughes Stadium for the first time on Monday night. The team is a little over three weeks away from their season opener, which will be on August 30th on the road against Nebraska-Kearney.

The team's struggles over the last three years are well-documented. The Lions finished 0-11 in 2017, and have won just three games the last three years.

Even with the lack of recent success, there seems to be some real optimism around the team heading into spring practice. Head coach Denver Johnson basically turned over his entire staff in the offseason, and says over the last few days he's seen something from the players he hasn't seen in his first three years at MSSU.

"We have about a dozen or fifteen guys I'm really encouraged by," says coach Johnson, "They have kind of taken ownership of this football team. That's really encouraging as a coach. The team will never be all that it can be until the players really take ownership with that. In the past years we've had a lot of older guys around here that weren't quite buying into what we were trying to do and how we were trying to do it. I think we're at least by all of that now."
