Student Safety a Top Priority in Pittsburg

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

Big changes have hit the streets surrounding Pittsburg High, all in the name of safety.

There's now a 4-way stop that will be activated this Thursday at the intersection of 4th Street and Free King Highway. But that's not all. A school speed zone is now in effect on 4th street, reducing the speed limit from 40 to 25 miles per hour when school is in session. There will also be new eastern entrance to the school, designed to help ease traffic.

Pittsburg City Manager Daron Hall explains what prompted these changes.

"There was an accident last year that kind of brought it to the point, but for the most part, people asked us to study this on behalf of all the students and all the traffic out there. And so we did. And it all comes back to safety, " said Hall.

The city manager is referring to an incident involving Pittsburg High student Gabriel Norton, who was hit by a car while using a crosswalk near Pittsburg High's main entrance.

The school's principal is optimistic the new school speed zone will prevent future accidents like that.

"It just makes sense to slow people down as they're driving past here, to ensure that kids can walk across the street safely, and ensure motorists don't hit somebody, because I can't think of a worse thing to have to live with," said Principal Phil Bressler.
