Roderique Returning to Starting QB Role for Pitt State

Pittsburg State will have a familiar face under center when they open up the season later this month.

Head coach Tim Beck says senior QB John Roderique will return to his starting role. Roderique has been the opening day starter for the Gorillas in each of the last three seasons, but has also missed time in all three seasons with injury. Last season he played in nine games, making six starts.

"I think everybody's seen flashes of John, on how effective he can be when he's healthy and everything's going well for him," Beck says.

Roderique finished 2017 with a bang. He didn't start the team's bowl game against Arkansas Tech, but he did come in and help them erase a 31-7 deficit to win 48-31. Roderique finished the game with 221 yards passing and two touchdowns.

"He came in and played probably his best football he's ever played while he's been here," adds Beck.

Roderique will be the starter, with a pair of redshirt freshmen behind him in BJ Bradbury and Matt Harman.

"Those guys are hungry and excited about the possibility of playing," Beck says, "They're going to push John at practice. I think the experience he has and the young guys picking up from his experience will be good for them. Also, the energy and excitement the young guys have will be good for John."

The Gorillas will open up the year on August 30th at home against Central Oklahoma.
