Advocate Group Invites Joplin To Celebrate Route 66 - July 10

Updated:

The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites the public, Route 66 enthusiasts and novices alike to stop by Joplin City Hall (6th and Main) on July 10th, 2018, for a fun afternoon.

The national nonprofit works to preserve America's historic places and is launching a branded road trip with National Geographic. They'll be traveling the entirety of Route 66 as a way to celebrate what makes it so special, and to advocate for its continued preservation. The group recently released its annual list of "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places" which includes Route 66. They plan to pursue National Historic Train status for the Mother Road.

Saving Places caravan started in Chicago on Monday, July 3rd, and will spend the entire month making its way across the country to Santa Monica.

Officials say the group should arrive in Joplin, Missouri just after noon on July 10th and stay much of the afternoon. The caravan's branded 27-foot vintage Airstream will be parked on the 6th Street (north) side of City Hall.

They invite everyone out to spin a prize wheel for Routed 66-themed swag, take a photo to be part of the heritage journey and sign the pledge to support the route.

"Driving Route 66 is the quintessential American road trip," said Amy Webb, senior field director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "It is the most iconic, culturally-celebrated, and internationally-recognized stretch of highway in America. By promoting this authentic experience, we can help preserve a beloved icon and at the same time, revive local economies in rural communities."
