Local Police Officer Joins Students in Foot Race

Updated:

Students in Oronogo, Missouri had some fun with a local officer while waiting for the school bus.

The Oronogo Police Department posted the following:

On Friday, June 8th, 2018, the Oronogo Police Department received a message to the agency Facebook page about one Oronogo Police Officers early morning interaction with some children as they awaited the bus to summer school. Here is what the Oronogo resident had to say:

“I just wanted to share something that happened this morning. The city hall is a summer school bus stop and like most mornings so far the kids were running around and playing as they were waiting. An officer came out and ran some races with the kids! They were impressed with how fast he was, I was impressed with what a great guy is on the force. He ran with the bigger kids then ran a race with one of the smaller kids and let him win. It gave me such a feeling of pride and community to see this officer take a few minutes out of his morning to give these kids a fun and memorable experience. Well done Oronogo Police Department, this was a really great morning!”

After receiving the information, parking lot video from that morning was reviewed to see who the resident was talking about. Officer John Shember could be seen taking some time out of his morning duties to have a race across the parking lot with the children. Officer Shember also races one smaller child back across the parking lot in a very close race that the young man won. Police Officers are often chastised for the split-second decisions they make or for the other duties they perform almost daily that are not convenient for the person who may be cited or arrested for violation of a state or municipal law. It is nice to see a young officer take time out of his morning duties to have some fun with these local children before their school day begins. The Oronogo Police Department is very proud of the actions of Officer Shember and encourages community engagement during the performance of our daily duties.
