Update: The suspect is 25-year-old Christopher Miller of Joplin. He's charged with 3rd degree assault - special victim and resisting/interfering with arrest, detention or stop. He was arrested and taken to jail on a $5,000 cash bond.
Miller was stopped by the officer for riding his bicycle on a city sidewalk in the business district.
On Sunday, June 10th around 8:24 in the morning, a Joplin Police Officer stopped a male riding his bicycle at 7th and Jackson. The department says the female officer asked the male for his name and he said it was "Gil." When asked again, the male said his name was "Kevin."
The officer said she saw that the male had a pocket knife so she asked for consent to search. The male consented. According to JPD, during the search, the officer found a previous book-in sheet in his pocket with his photo and name on it. She says as she started to look at that info the male punched her in the nose and took off running.
The officer chased the male until he climbed over a fence and out of sight. Other officers showed up on scene to help contain the area until the K9 unit arrived.
The K9 found the male hiding in some bushes between houses. Authorities say he continued to resist arrest and was ultimately arrested. He had nine JPD warrants and was also charged with assault on an officer and resisting arrest. The officer was okay but did have her personal sunglasses broken during the assault.
KOAM/FOX14 has reached out for the suspect's name, photo and additional details. His name is not "Gil" or "Kevin."
