Neosho Council Approves Use Tax for November Election

Updated:
NEOSHO, MISSOURI -

Neosho residents could see a new tax on purchases made outside the city.

Neosho City Council voted to add a use tax issue to this November ballot at tonight's council meeting.

Implementing a use tax would allow the city to apply the local sales tax to purchases made online and outside of the state.

City manager Dana Daniel says that the use tax would generate 60 to 80-thousand dollars in revenue for the city - and help level the playing field for local businesses.

Daniel says, " The local shopper, who goes to the local merchant, is paying that tax. Somebody shopping online isn't necessarily paying that tax. And so, you can almost view it as the use tax is not a new tax, it's just making sure the tax is the same for everyone."

The council will have to approve a final draft of the ballot before it goes to voters in November.
