Joplin Woman Scammed Out Of $700 On Facebook

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

A Joplin woman says she was scammed by a man who told her on Facebook...that she was eligible for a grant of $100,000.
     She's now out $700.
The scam - started off simple.
Becky Allgood, Scam Victim: "It said...Dear Becky, this is Agent Larry from grant headquarters office, your friend, forwarded your number to me that you want to apply for grant money."
Becky Allgood didn't want to mention her friend's name, but, she felt initially she could trust this 'Agent Larry'.
He told her she qualified for a $100,000 grant, so she applied.
Then, to her surprise...
Allgood: "Your grant application for $500,000 has been successful approved...$500,000."
To get it - all she needed to pay was a fee of $2,500.
She didn't have that much - and through negotiating with 'Agent Larry' she ultimately sent him $700 - and never got her 'grant' money.
Allgood: "It really makes me feel...terrible...that somebody can do this...and get away with it."
Allgood contacted the Joplin Police Department - and this isn't their first rodeo with an online scam.
Capt. Trevor Duncan, Joplin Police Department: "Scams like this these people aren't stupid, they know what they're doing, they put a lot of work into distancing themselves from being caught."
For Allgood - it's gone further than just taking her money.
Allgood: "He's opened up a new account in my name with my picture on messenger and he's getting in touch with all my friends and family."
Duncan says the best way to protect yourself and your family is to do your homework and at the first red flag, stop immediately.
As for Allgood, she's reached out to her bank..
Allgood: "I had insurance, so, they possibly will replace my money."
She hopes her story will warn others to be more careful when it comes to trusting people online.
Joplin Police reiterate what so many have said before.
Always make sure you know who you're dealing with before agreeing to send money anywhere.

    Update On Block 22 Restaurants

The long awaited Block22 in Pittsburg opened to students recently to allow them to move in to the newly created lofts.     However, restaurants were expected to be opened by now, but, they're not, leaving some wondering what's going on.   When you look at the Block22 restaurant space, there's not much to look at.  Even though, originally, residents were told, they'd be ready by now.

With the temperatures cooling down, many of us are starting to get our heaters and fire places going.      For Austin Simpson, serving his community is something he thought of at a young age and 3 years ago, when he was 18, he founded the "Gold and Silver Seniors Club" in Webb City.     It's mission - to get those over fifty out and active.
