Ice Injury Advice

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

Fourstate hospitals have been keeping busy this weekend, with people falling and injuring themselves on the ice.

Mercy Hospital in Carthage has seen around 20 fall patients over the past two days, and Via Christi has seen at least seven.

"It was a little difficult at first, I mean you have to walk very slow at first and make sure you get where you're going very carefully. Make sure you have shoes with a nice tread, cause it's very slick out here" says Pittsburg resident, Rhema Taylor.

It's these kinds of conditions that have been keeping emergency room's in the Fourstates in full swing.

Although falls have been common around the area, a simple fall can be devastating to populations like the elderly.

"If you happen to be on blood thinners and you've had a fall, you're at much higher risk for bleeding on the brain. Especially in those that are over 55." says Dr. Timothy Stebbins from Via Christi.

But anybody can slip and fall on the ice, whether it's in a driveway or a parking lot.

"I haven't bit it yet but I'm sure there's lots of other people that's bit it. Just gotta take it easy" says a mall-goer.

Dr. Stebbins recommends being seen by a physician if anybody falls and loses consciousness, has a seizure or significant memory loss.

Along with not being able to bear weight on your injury, have a bone deformity or have numbness or tingling past the injured area.

And for the less serious but still painful injuries, ice.

"Typically in the first 24 to 48 hours, we recommend ice to the effected area. 20 minutes per hour. The best thing you can do in rice therapy"

Which is "rest, ice, compression and elevation."

He says you can reduce the swelling if you elevate your joint or injured limb above your heart.

"This is not the time to get the paper or check the mail. If it's icy outside, give it time to melt before you venture out."
