SPECIAL REPORT: School Days - FOX 14 TV Joplin and Pittsburg News Weather Sports |

Two four state school districts try a four-day school week. Chetopa and St. Paul it started with the semester in January, but Pierce City, MO started the school year at four days.

Each added 30 to 40 minutes to the school day that pushes students energy levels getting up earlier, longer day at school, and some parents say its too exhausting.

Elementary students seem to feel tired pains more than older students, but while tired bigger kids say they just make up for it relaxing on their extra day off from school.

Districts say they are saving money with the change by not running school buses, in energy costs, and by not having to pay substitute teachers as full-time educators. Parents and students are using the day off to schedule doctor appointments for themselves and their families.

Teachers who were skeptical say they're making the same progress in classes using the extra minutes to help students with homework.

There are no clear and convincing studies on whether students performance during four-day weeks improves or his hindered, but some parents and even a student or two like having classes five days a week.
