SPECIAL REPORT: Leveling the Playing Field, Part II

Updated:

The world of sports is big business and serious competition even at the high school level. Missouri home school students. Hope to follow in the footsteps of Tim Tebow who was a home schooler who played football with a public high school. But in Lamar, home of four state championships.. Not all are in favor.

"You're not the underdog now you're the big dog trying to hold steady wonder if people see that and want to be a part of that," explains Kristi Lehman who has sent 4 athletes to Lamar High School.

" I hate to sound old school but its really an either or issue."

"If you don't want to be here all the time then why do you want to be here part of the time , if we're good enough for you to for your child to be involved in extra curricular activities then why aren't we good enough for your child to be here," explains Carl Junction AD Jesse Wall.

Carl Junction Athletic Director says every year he has home school students asking if they can play and he has to say no because of MSHAA guidelines, which he says are all about time in the seats at school.

"If we're going to tell a kid that attends our school they have to be here this many hours, per day, during the week for the year every years every year then is it right to allow someone who isn't doing that same thing to be involved in that activity."

Home school tennis player caroline holman competes individually in tournaments but it is not a home school league sport. Basketball has national championships in Springfield.

Holman and her coach see benefits to her being on a high school team.

"The team atmosphere would be really good and if I wanted to play tennis in college I would be more prepared better preparation."

"Team unity let her play matches week in week out allow her to have a constant a practice with people her ability, her age."

Lehman believes the competition will bother students.

"I could actually even see it causing friction in a team. You bring someone in that's just wonderful and we're great we're thrilled to have you but who does it bump off?"

"Yeah some kids might be upset if they came in and they were really good and better than them and they didnt get to play over them that would probably upset some people."

But Carl Junction soccer player Olivia Toney sees both sides having been home schooled once.

" I wouldn't care if home schoolers played with us they still do school its just in their own way."

"I think if they earn the spot they should get the spot i dont think age same age wise wether go to shcool or ot if they're better than you they're better than you."

"I think that would be really cool honestly i think just because you dont go to that school doesn't mean you cant represent that schools team you sitll live in that city

Olivia's mom has seen access to home school sports work while living in Iowa..

" Home schoolers should definitely get to play sports. If they can go in and take educational classes then i think they should 5644 then i think they should also be able to do extracurricular activities."

And that is happening now..Angie Patrick home schools but her kids take some classes in Sheldon.

"My youngest is in speech he goes twice a week in the mornings for 30 minutes a day they all go to music at the school my daughter she's 11 she goes to band and my middle child begged until I let him go to P.E. as well as music."

While home schooler Jarrod Lundy attends Franklin Tech computer classes for just two hours.. , using tools his parents could never afford..

He can also take part in skills usa and future business leaders of america clubs. But he would have liked to play basketball.

"I enjoy sports enough it would have been a fun thing."

Rep Charlie Davis who home schooled two of his children says in school, classes and sports are both supposed to be educational.

"You learn to depend on each other you learn responsibility cause those people are depending on you so i think its something we should visit about allowing our homes school kids to participate in sports."
