Pitt State Sweeps MIAA Athlete of the Week Awards

Updated:

Pittsburg State seniors Jessica Macy and Adam Volkert were named the MIAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday (October 1).

Macy turned in a second straight impressive performance Saturday (Sept. 28), racing to a second-place individual finish in the Maroon Division II field at the 28th annual Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. She crossed the finish line in the six-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 39.1 seconds to defeat all but one of 350 competitors. Macy, who captured the individual title in the MSSU Stampede last week, led the Gorillas to a third-place team finish among 34 competing schools. The senior is a native of Albion, Neb. where he competed at Boone Central High School.

Others nominated: Lindsay Cuadra, Emporia State; Liz Damman, Nebraska-Kearney; Megan Glamann, Central Missouri; Twishanna Williams, Lincoln.

Volkert made a successful season debut Saturday (Sept. 28) racing to the individual meet title in the Maroon Division II field in the 28th annual Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. Volkert, a three-time All-MIAA performer who exercised a redshirt season in 2012, crossed the finish line in the eight-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 11 seconds to beat his closest competitor by 10 seconds. Volkert helped the Gorillas to a sixth place team finish in the meet.

Others nominated: Jacob Bull, Emporia State; Kevin Carder, Nebraska-Kearney; Laban Sialo, Central Missouri.
