Updated: Feb 16, 2012
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

The senior class at Joplin High School receives a surprise for their upcoming prom.

The prom coordinator for Joplin High teams up with the Ambush Squad to offer the Joplin senior class the prom of a lifetime.

Students received a special message at a meeting this afternoon.  Pop sensation Katy Perry delivered the message to the seniors via a video.

Although she won't be performing at their prom, students will receive free prom dresses and tuxedos, free flowers, the prom will be held at the Hammons Convention Center, and many other perks for this year's senior dance.  The seniors will have free portraits and boys will also receive tuxedos at a lowered rate of $50.

Organizers say they wanted to make the event extra special for students who have been through a lot in the past year.

"It was something I came up with as a mom thinking about how your senior year should be and this is an unusual circumstance," says Melissa Blayton of the Ambush Squad.  "So wanting to do something to give these kids a last hoorah, to get them excited about the end of the year, and it's something through the collaboration of a lot of amazing people I was able to pull together."

The dance will take place Saturday, April 21.

CORRECTION:  It was initially reported that the prom would be all expenses paid.  In fact, the boys will receive tuxedos at the lowered rate of $50.  Also, the event will take place at the Hammons Convention Center which is owned by Holiday Inn.
