MIAMI, OKLAHOMA -
Neo A&M College is now offering an equestrian team for students. The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competitions will involve riders of all skill levels, both men and women.
The college already has a rodeo team, but the equestrian team is different. There's no roping or barrel racing. Competitors are judged on riding, holding correct positions and communication and cueing the horse correctly.
NEO is looking for 25 to 30 students to compete. Depending on skill level, students will have the chance to get scholarships for being on the team.
Another perk is being able to use the school's horses and equipment.
"I am the only guy on the team at the moment, we hope to see more but I like it any ways so, this is really the only junior college that is going to have this," says Levi Mitchell. "When we travel we hope to be very competitive this coming Fall, in the showing, and we hope to make sure that we're very familiar with all the different styles of riding out there with all the different horses we can be."
The students will participate in competitions throughout the U.S. The school currently has four horses but hopes to add about 11 more.
