The Missouri House this morning honored the service of AmeriCorps following the Joplin tornado.
The first AmeriCorps volunteers arrived in Joplin within hours of the May 22nd tornado. They immediately began working with local authorities to assist in search and rescue, and to establish a missing person's hotline.
AmeriCorps is a federal service organization created during the Bill Clinton administration.
"A volunteer operation that has facilitated, recruited, and supervised more than 60,600 volunteers, providing more than 579,000 hours of volunteer service since the tornado," says Representative Bill White.
Representative White from Joplin and Charlie Davis from Duquesne led the effort to commend AmeriCorps members from 20 organizations from seven states.
